Kamut (Triticum turgidum var. turanium) originated thousands of years ago in the "Fertile Crescent" in the Middle East, being recorded from ancient Egypt to the Tigris-Euphrates valley. Kamut is a registered trademark of Kamut International Ltd based in the USA, and the word itself is an ancient Egyptian word for wheat.

3. So it's related to wheat?
Kamut is closely related to modern durum (pasta) wheats. It shares the same genus as wheat but is a different species.

4. So, can wheat allergic people tolerate Kamut?
Like Spelt, Kamut has a lower allergenic reaction than wheat so some wheat allergic people are able to tolerate it. You should check with your medical practitioner to see if it qualifies as an alternative to wheat. ^ back to top

5. How did it get to the USA?
Grains were returned to the USA after World War 2 from Egypt and were grown in Montana. They were "rediscovered" there in 1977. Nowadays Kamut represents one of the most extensive speciality cereal product lines in the USA and Canada.
